VCDs:

(video compact discs) are very popular in Asia. The quality of the picture is at least as good as that of VHS tapes. All are narrated in standard Chinese (Mandarin/Putonghua), some also have narration in Cantonese. They can be played on PCs and iMacs with CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drives and software like Windows Media Player or similar. Most DVD players can also play VCDs, but I would suggest that you first check the manual.

Xiao Tieseng: "Internal Martial Arts of Xiao Family - Imperial Yang Style Taijiquan" set of VCDs:

Items

XTS1-11

Internal Martial Arts of Xiao Family include Yang Style Taijiquan, Bagua and Xingyi. It was Xiao Gongzhuo, who became famous for his skills in internal martial arts and started the tradition of teaching them within the clan. Xiao Gongzhuo practiced martial arts since childhood under guidance of his father, late Qing dynasty military official. At the age of sixteen he started to learn Chinese wrestling and Shaolin Boxing from Zhang Fengyan; later he studied Cheng style Baguazhang from Li Wenbiao, Tongbei Boxing from Zhan Ce (nicknamed "Divine Hand"), Hao style Taijiquan from Hao Weizhen, Li style Taijiquan from Li Ruidong, as well as very rare Funei (Imperial) branch of Yang style Taijiquan from Fu Jiechen. This set of VCDs is presented by Xiao Tieseng, son of Xiao Gongzhuo and current inheritor of the style; it focuses on Imperial Yang style Taijiquan. According to practitioners of this style this was the original art that Yang Luchan taught just after he arrived to Beijing, and which included ten sets. The versions popular now were all modified by Yang Banhou (Yang Luchan's son), who was upset that his father taught the complete art openly, and decided to spread a trimmed version that had only one Large Frame set. Natural Boxing (Zi Ran Men, Natural Style, Natural Gate) is a rare internal martial art, known for its combat effectiveness. In practice this means developing reflexes, courage, both physical and psychological attributes that make one a good fighter. The style has Taoist roots and became known because of Du Xinwu, bodyguard to Sun Yat-sen, the first president of Republic of China. Du's most famous disciple was late Wan Laisheng (1902-1992), who gained his fame during fighting competitions in 1930. Originally trained in Shaolin Six Harmonies Boxing as well as Luohan Boxing, Wan became famous for his skills in Natural Boxing and has has spread this rare style in China. This set commemorates 100th anniversary of Wan Laisheng's birth and shows many seldom shown aspects of Natural Boxing. Guo Jingang: "Dai Family Xinyiquan":

Items

GZG

This is first VCD set ever produced focusing on rare style of Dai Family Xinyiquan. Kept secret for centuries by Dai clan members, it was the original style that Li Laoneng learnt and modified into today's Xingyiquan, one of three famous internal styles. Even today Dai Family Xinyi is still a little known and obscure style taught traditionally in small county in Shanxi Province. The style puts great emphasis on the development of internal strength of Dantian - which is accomplished through practice of a special set of internal methods. Later various striking methods and routines are introduced to practice. The style is first practiced in relaxed, smooth manner. Once the soft aspect is developed one learns to use explosive power of the whole body. This set of VCDs is demonstrated by Guo Jingang, long-time disciple of Yue Guining and grand-disciple of Dai Kui. It covers basically all empty hand methods of Dai Family Xinyiquan:

  • Five Dantian development methods, including Squatting Monkey Stance, Turning Dantian, Rolling Dantian, Smashing Dantian, etc.

  • Footwork (Bu Fa)

  • Shoulder (Striking) Methods (Bang Fa)

  • rare method of "Rubbing Ankles and Polishing Mirror" (Mo Jing Mo Jing)

  • fist methods of Seven Cannons (Qi Pao)

  • famous Three Fists (San Quan)

  • Five Elements Fists (Wu Xing Quan), and Ten (Animal) Shapes (Shi Xing)

  • Linked Fists (Lian Huan Quan) and Linked Seizes (Lian Zhu Ba)

  • Five Sequences of Locking Postures (Wu Tang Za Shi)

  • two versions of famous Four Seizes (Si Ba) routine

Movements are shown in both normal and slow speed.

The VCDs were produced to accompany the book "Dai Family Xinyiquan" by the same author. On over 400 pages it describes in detail all material presented on the VCDs, as well as includes the history, theory and excerpts from old boxing manuals of the style. Both the book and VCDs are in Chinese.
